Whitening for Sensitive Teeth — Lakeview, Chicago
Yes, you can whiten sensitive teeth. You just need someone who treats your enamel like it matters.
By cosmetic dentist Dr. Brittany Dickinson. Half a block from the Paulina Brown Line.
"Can I whiten my teeth if I have sensitivity?"
Almost always, yes. The reason most people give up on whitening isn't because their teeth can't handle it — it's because they were sold a one-size-fits-all kit (or sat through a 60-minute in-office Zoom session) that wasn't built for sensitive enamel.
Sensitive teeth need a different game plan:
Lower-concentration peroxide that works gradually instead of all at once
Custom-fit trays so gel sits where it should, not on your gums
Desensitizing protocols before, during, and after
A dentist who actually watches you through it — not a kit shipped to your door
That's what we do here.
Two Protocols, Picked For You
I recommend one of two whitening protocols for sensitive teeth — never the standard in-office Zoom blast.
Option 1: The Zoom Pen — For a Subtle Boost
If your teeth are mostly the shade you want and you're looking for a small, gentle brightening (think: 2–4 shades), the Zoom Whitening Pen is my go-to.
Lower-concentration gel applied with a brush-tip pen
You use it daily at home for a short window
Builds up gradually over a few weeks
Very low sensitivity risk
Lasts about 3 months — perfect for ongoing maintenance
Best for: People prepping for a wedding or event with healthy enamel, or anyone who wants a fresh, natural-looking lift without the "Hollywood white" leap.
$50
Option 2: KöR Whitening — For a Noticeable Difference
If you want a real, dramatic change (think: 6–10 shades brighter) and you've struggled with whitening kits in the past because of sensitivity, KöR is the only system I trust to deliver true results without wrecking sensitive teeth.
Custom-fit trays made from precision impressions
Refrigerated gel that stays chemically active longer
Worn overnight (your enamel's lowest-stress window)
Built-in desensitizing protocols
Results that hold up — even for coffee, red wine, and tea drinkers
Best for: People with deeper staining, age-related yellowing, or anyone who's been told "you can't whiten" by another dentist.
Starting at $1,100
Why not standard in-office Zoom for sensitive teeth?
The 60-minute UV-light Zoom session is a great treatment — for the right enamel. It uses high-concentration gel under heat, which is exactly what sensitive teeth don't need. If you've tried it and walked out in pain, that's why. We have better options for you.

Frequently Asked Questions
-
Not with the right protocol. Both Zoom Pen and KöR are designed for lower-stress whitening. We also use a desensitizing pre-treatment for KöR patients and check in with you throughout. If you do feel any sensitivity, we have a built-in adjustment plan.
-
A Zoom Pen lasts about 3 months of regular use — perfect as a maintenance tool or for a gentle ongoing lift. KöR results hold for 1–2 years, longer with maintenance gel touch-ups. Coffee, red wine, and dark tea will dull any whitening over time — but KöR is uniquely designed to resist re-staining.
-
Existing veneers and crowns don't whiten. If you're considering whitening AND veneers, we whiten your natural teeth first, then color-match the veneers to your new shade. This is exactly the kind of sequencing my facially driven smile design process is built around.
-
KöR is one of the few systems that can lift tetracycline staining — but it takes longer (8–12 weeks instead of 2–4). We'll talk through realistic expectations at your consult.
-
Yes. Whitening works on clean enamel. If you're due for a cleaning, we'll schedule that first — sometimes patients are surprised by how much brighter their teeth look just from a thorough cleaning.
-
Tell me what you tried, what happened, and what you wanted to see. Most "failed" whitening cases I see were either the wrong system for the staining type, or stopped too early due to sensitivity. We can almost always do better.

I do accept insurance as an out of network provider. However, Insurance does not cover cosmetic procedures.
